Save our NHS: get-together in your local area

September 27th, 2012 by

Over the next few weeks, doctors will decide on the future of the NHS in your local area. Hundreds of 38 Degrees members near you have already signed the local petition, urging doctors to protect it from profit hungry private companies like Serco and Virgin Care.

But the doctors in charge will already be coming under huge pressure from big companies, keen to make money from the government’s NHS changes. We need to act fast, to make sure they know their local patients want them to protect the NHS.

If lots of us get together and take our message to local Clinical Commissioning Groups – the group of doctors making the decisions – we can make sure they know when they stand up for the NHS, they’ve got thousands of us supporting them.

Can you organise a get-together of 38 Degrees members in your area to plan for taking our petition to doctors on your local CCG? We need to move quickly – so ideally these get-togethers should be held as soon as possible. Can you organise one in your area?

Find out more about organising a local NHS get-together and get started here.

You don’t have to be an expert on the NHS to organise a get-together. The doctors in charge of the changes have been asked to find out what local patients think. So it’s their job to listen to what we have to say.

Most GPs want to protect the NHS. If they know local people agree, it’ll be much easier to resist pressure from big business. Now’s the time to work together and back the local doctors protecting our NHS.

Can you help make it happen?

Here’s how it works:

1. Choose a nearby meeting place where 38 Degrees members can get together (eg. a cafe, pub, community centre – or even at your home, if you prefer)
2. Add the event to the 38 Degrees website, so the 38 Degrees office team can let other members know it’s happening

I have set up an epetition to have an inquiry into govt. ministers connections with private healthcare companies. Please sign it. the number is 40126 but 38 degrees gets rid of my posts if I put the link on to the petition. Not very democratic.

hi jendurham – that is a really good idea – i can’t find the petition though – where do we go to find it?

    The link is http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/40126
Hope you find it before 38 degrees take this off.
Has 22 signatures in 24 hours, so it needs a lot more.

After watching the petition opposing the NHS changes fill up, 160k+ only to be ignored, sorry but I think epetitions are a waste of time, buffers for public anger to make us think we are doing something.
Someone has commented on the BBC Points of View message board that the BBC didn’t cover the changes enough. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/NF1951574?thread=8384697

The BBC do not cover the changes at all.
However, what harm will it do you to sign a petition? Surely you can do that as well as all the other campaigning you do. I signed the 38 degrees petition as well. The govt. ignored it because it was from 38 degrees, that well-known left-wing Labour controlled group.
The point about epetitions on the govt. website is that you cannot sign as a group, just as an individual.
    Shouldn’t your name be ColdWater?

You can call it what you like. I’d think of more as realistic, or disillutioned. The NHS petiion was clicked by all those people and what did it do? Nowt.
    The 38degrees isn’t a political group.
I’ve lived, breathed, had sleepless nights and bad dreams about this stinking change to the NHS over the last 2 years so don’t think of me as someone who doens’t care. I’ve cared too much and almost given myself depression.
I’m afraid I’ve come to believe the elite in Westminster will do whatever the board members tell them, red and blue rosettes alike. Corrupt to the core. If some of the smartest minds in the country, the doctors, who were opposed to this, couldn’t do anything, they were shut out of No 10, all the noise the 38degrees made was not heard, news blackouts, Virgin, Serco etc are scooping the proceeds, whatever the public, (who largely don’t kow what’s what because the BBC ignored it all), think of it, I’m just going to burn myself out for no reason.

Not asking you to burn yourself out, just sign an epetition. Your response would have taken longer to type than going on the epetition website and sign up to it.
For your information, there are 5 epetitions which have reached the 100,000 threshold and 3 of them are being given parliamentary time.
I think if a petition to do with the NHS is given a chance in Parliament we might actually this time get some Libdems on our side. I do not think all MPs are corrupt.
When I started going on 38 degrees website, there were two of us to sign up. This time last year my husband was operated on for a brain tumour. He died 9 months ago. I feel like saying to heck with it all and not bothering any more. After all, I am a pensioner, only just, and it will not bother me for much longer.
However, my mother became a nurse before the NHS started, sio I know what it was like back then. Her father died because they could not get him treatment as he had lost his tailoring business in the depression. She died in 2006, after having contracted MRSA in hospital. She would have been sacked if two patients of hers had passed a disease onto each other.
My area of Durham has been taken over by Virgin Care. My GP is the chair of the local CCG which was set up over a year ago.
While my husband was dying they were busy having meetings to line their pockets.
One of the GPs stood in the corner of our bedroom and called my husband greedy for having another thing wrong with him!
One of the epetitions which has got over 170000 signatures was to have Virgin keep the Westcoast Mainline. we all know what has happened there.
You are right that the reason the people do not know is because the BBC and others keep quiet. But you are colluding with them by not signing any petition you can get your hands on.
Over 100,000 have signed a petition to keep children’s heart surgery in Leicester. That will not make any difference if we do not stop the main cause of the NHS mess, the corruption in the House of Commons and the Lords.

204 signatures on the epetition now.
38 degrees sent me an email to say it could not ask members to sign up to an epetition on the NHS.
Yet I have just received another email from them to say that 150000 of us signed up to the epetition on the badger cull. The email has a link to the epetition.
    Double standards here, I think.
