Jeremy Hunt Ad in the paper today

September 11th, 2012 by

Message sent! 121,227 of us signed and thousands of us donated. Today, when the new health minister Jeremy Hunt looks through his morning newspapers, this is what he will see:

Jeremy Hunt Ad in the Telegraph today

Thank you for being part of this. Together we’ve shown Jeremy Hunt just how determined we are to protect our NHS. We’ve got our message to him when it matters most – just as he’s starting his new job. That should make him think twice about pushing through further dangerous changes, cuts or privatisation.

It’s two years since 38 Degrees members first voted to make protecting the NHS top priority. Since then, we’ve done a huge amount together. Petitions, local meetings, messages to our MPs, billboard advertisements, legal submissions, newspaper ads, the list goes on! Now we’ve made it clear to the new minister that we’re not about to give up: we’ll keep campaigning as long as the NHS is at risk.

38 Degrees members know how important it is to have a decent health service which we can all rely on, whether we’re rich or poor. We know that the NHS is something Britain can be proud of. And each of us knows that we’re not alone – there are thousands of other 38 Degrees members, all across the UK, all ready to work together to protect our health service.

Great work. Got to hate that spineless brat scum.

  • PC

Nice one 38 Degrees. The NHS is definitely worth fighting for, so let’s hope Mr Hunt agrees with US.

  • Kathy

Great advert – will he listen? It’s up to us all to make him.

  • Pat
  • Cheryl

….if the NHS is destroyed, it will never be regained. Therefore our efforts must be kept up, and backed up with whatever is necessary. Every one of us needs health care, as do our parents children and their children. We have a system that is the envy of other countries, and far superior to that of the USA for example. We must protect it at all costs

  • Monica

He will listen if enough of us shout loudly enough…and I will if you will.

  • Vicky

Great to see this, cogratulations and thank you, we will keep on supporting the fight to keep Our NHS. The Mothers and Fathers are out on the streets in Spain Protesting at the Govrenment cuts to their children’s Education. We need more People Power.

Negativity wont get anyone anywhere !

  • Gillian

Brilliant! And we’ll keep our word.

  • Ann

Well I guess if nothing else if we all try we can say that we fought to save the NHS for our children and grandchildren. Is this what Cameron meant by ‘Big Society’ do you think?

  • Animal Heathen

Brilliant. The NHS is not his to sell and I want it back. It has been paid for by generations of hard work and it must remain in the hands of it’s rightful owners. Us, the general public.

    well done

  • Anonymous

    Beautiful irony there :)

  • Linda Bond

The Tories/coalition have no mandate to change/ privatise our NHS but that hasnt stop them. They are acting like dictators. We need a regime change fast!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/ian.jenkinson.146 Ian Jenkinson

Does the Telegraph have any comment on this ad being in it’s pages?

  • seleus

This person is very devious and not trustworthy. He should have no responsibility especially after the incident with Rupert Murdoch.

  • Dr Hill

Excellent notice here! Lets work hard now to keep the corporations ie the pharmaceutical industry from taking over as they have in the US. We must be VERY careful to not let them put in pharma advisors into the specific watch dog bodies as they did in the US which resulted in enforced vaccnation madness and allowing people to be their guinnea pigs for untested properly/fast tracked drugs and vaccines. Watch out for the private businesses as they will conform to corporate illicit crazyness for a price which pharma will certainly wave in front of them.
Read up on how terrible things are in the US health system and that’ll help inspire all to action! For them its all about making money for shareholders NOT about people health at all. The people have been sold down the river perhaps? Lets make sure it doesnt happen here!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001301846902 John Kemp

GREAT! Pity, though, that we were not aware of J Hunt’s support for homeopathy at the time we put out this ad. That alone makes him unsuitable as Health Minister!

  • red monica

I’m afraid Pat’s right – he wont listen. The fact is he knows that’s what the majority of people think and it won’t be news to him. The truth is the National Health Service is not high on the list of priorities for the Tories, along with decent education for all. Look at their driving force – priviledge for those with the means to buy it. What really needs to be done is for the majority in this country to wake up to that and get them out of government.

  • apearman

He certainly won’t agree but he will take notice.

  • Julian Gower

When you watch his body language while “Grinning Man” acts his role, simply to carry out whatever he’s told by those who want to make personal profits from our N.H.S, to further his career as a politician, you can see exactly how disingenuous he is, a duplicitous opportunist climber, with no concept of altruism or being part of greater humanity. He needs watching, and his character should be made clear to those voters fooled by his act. Let’s start by making sure he becomes known as “Grinning Man”.

  • apearman

The paper is a Tory rag and will do anything for money. Pay them enough and they would become socialists

  • Dr Hill

Big Society is just a con of smoke and mirrors unless he means of course corporation society which I think is more honest re this government! This is one where we are just slaves to corporations-you know, like how the work policies now supply cheap labour paid by tax payers for work in supermarkets who avoid tax. Its a one way flow to the big boys at are expense!

  • BuddhaWolf

Proud to be a part of the movement which will make him listen!! As a young person living with a cancer diagnosis, I can say the NHS SAVED MY LIFE! I’d be dead or disfigured without it..and know many others whom would be too.

  • Ashmole

Jeremy Hunt can’t be all that bad as he believes in Homeopathy. All sorts of people are trying to get rid of it. Big Pharma is terrified that people will no longer use their harmful and wasteful medicines so the Homeopathic hospital has been shut down and now they are working hard to ban homeopathic remedies…….So don’t judge him yet.

  • Dr Hill

    Truth will though-negative or not!

  • Linda

The NHS is not destroyed YET. My mother remembers the days prior to the NHS when health was by charity or payment. She lost two of her siblings due to not being able to pay. The fight needs to continue.

  • Kenny Richards

Well done everybody, lets hope the NHS will be protected. Its a complete disgrace and this arrogant government must not be allowed to dismantle this important institution. The cruel irony is all those that wish to ruin it use private health care anyway….

  • http://twitter.com/BenFulford1 Ben Fulford

Seems Jeremy Hunt has already authorised sell off of key elements of NHS: http://eoin-clarke.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/brutal-news-at-930am-today-jeremy-hunt.html

Thank u 38 Degs for all your efforts and guidance to enable us to hold on to what really belongs to us. If Jeremy wanted to eliminate the NHS then he shouldn’t have allowed the expense of 000s of pounds during the Olympic Opening Ceremony to show the world what the NHS means for Great Britain. Shame!

  • Dave

    Great!

  • Grandma Carol

    Hallelujah!

  • Mary Routh

Our problem is that the Tories only think in one layer: get rid of planning laws and it does not give you the right to build a monstrosity, it takes away your right to protect your sunlight through your neighbour building a monstrosity. Take away Health and safety legislation, and it does not give you the right to be dangerous and unhealthy – it takes away your right to be protected from sloppiness and profit. Free schools? who needs qualifications to be a teacher and hey, the world was created by God six thousand years ago, Yay! We have to challenge them every step of the way on everything because whatever else their parents paid for when educating these fools, it was not history. Or economics. Or compassion.

  • Grandma Carol

    Thank you for your advice.

  • John B Morris.

My name is John Morris,I paid in 47 years of weekly contributions including 4 years in the armed services.

Iam about to reach 78 and was refused the surgery advised by 2 doctors and a specialist surgeon willing to carry out the remedial work so that I could get my normal way of l;life back..

I cost me £2912 pound to have the refused NHS surgery undertaken immediately at a private hospital, subsequently this procedure has transformed my life as I don’t need to keep worrying the Doctors for more pain killers.

This will save the NHS money in the long run how can they be so shortsighted when handling financial resources.

My MP and I are trying to get the Chief Executive Bristol,North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to sort out the total let down by her staff to a senior citizen in his hour of need. John Morris.

  • Val Shuttleworth

If this government wants an example of a Big Society working at its finest, they need look no further than the foundation of the NHS. The current relentless dismantling and privatisation of the NHS show these over-privileged, cynical, clueless opportunists will never join in any Big Society – they stand to lose nothing even if we lose the NHS.

  • RICHTHOFEN

Excellent! Maybe soon we can tackle Halal food production – it is medieval and unnecessarily cruel to slit animals’ throats without stunning – all to incantations of an alien cult – then it is sold to us and fed to schoolchildren – all without being told that it is Halal – the RSPCA do nothing – let us show what hypocrites they and our unelected ‘government’ are for allowing animal welfare laws to be broken with impunity

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001301846902 John Kemp

I personally believe that this casts severe doubt on his judgment and suitability as Health Minister, and on David Cameron’s judgment in appointing him. I’m all for PROVEN herbal remedies, but homeopathy is mumbo jumbo, and can be lethal – by discouraging people from getting effective, proven medical help. I believe homeopathy has NO PLACE in the NHS and should be made illegal.

  • Geraldine

Very impressive. Looks great lets make sure we keep we keep on top of him!

  • Martiin.

Well done 38 degrees and all the supporters, keep the pressure on and ensure that the government is aware that ‘Joe Public’ is not going away!

  • http://twitter.com/selcaby Eleanor

That just makes him worse. Back in the 18th century when conventional medicine’s most fashionable treatment was bloodletting with leeches – which, surprisingly enough, is not good for you – homeopathy was indeed better, because it reassured patients that they were being treated (invoking the placebo effect) while doing no active harm. But since then, conventional medicine has taken a flying leap forward, while the science behind homeopathy has been proven to be based on false assumptions that simply aren’t compatible with our modern understanding of physics and chemistry. I recommend this book: http://www.trickortreatment.com/ if you are sincerely interested in this topic.

  • David Hurry

When the Health and Social Services act becomes law in 2013 there will no longer be a National Health Service. The responsibility for providing health care, which was part of the 1948 NHS act, will be removed and the Regional Commissioning boards will report to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. The health service will no longer be “National”. Only by taking action on a national scale can we preserve the NHS.

  • Anonymous

Kudos 38 Degrees and of course everyone who signed! Great to see everyone standing up and being counted. Bet there would have more if given the time, but am pleased with such a great turn-out as it is.

  • don webb

He won’t listen. The problem is he thinks he’s right and he’s stupid enough to press on like the buffoon, Osborne. It’s written all over both their faces.

  • David Hurry

If you want the health service to a National Health Service, “free to all at the point of need”, only dramatic action now will preserve it. The responsibility for providing health care will no longer be the responsibility of the government. Regional Commissioning Boards will report to the Minister, J Hunt.

  • Ted Cole

We must protect the N.H.S, if it is lost, we will never regain it. Frankly Jeremy Hunt is not the person to entrust the well being of the N.H.S to. This man is not to be trusted with something so precious.

  • Gus

‘The NHS is safe in our hands’. This the Conservative mantra that many fell for during the general election. The Conservatives always espouse this platitude during general elections. They have been disingenuous and have pulled the wool over our eyes with the arguments that the NHS has to reform in the 21st century. The acid test for reform is that the principle of ‘free at the point of delivery’ irrespective of means must be adhered to without any exception whatsoever. The creeping privatisation that will ape the system in the USA must be fought with every breath. Jeremy Hunts previous escapades at his former ministry do not augur well for his guardianship of the NHS, but we have given notice that we are watching him every step of the way.

  • David Hurry

Unfortunately just watching will not preserve the NHS. We need action.

  • collieman47

Great job well done .A big thanks to the all the British people for getting behind the 38 Degrees team, and this campain. We shouldnt have to do this, but the tories/libdems aren’t listening to the country. This is our NHS and we will fight to keep it to the end

  • D. Fitz

A lot of people were. A lot of people were also aware of his refusal to, whilst Culture Secretary, challenge Popoff Ministries who advertised ‘miracle water’ on their Sky TV program; they claim it cures everything from cancer to bankruptcy, yet Hunt refused to address this breach of UK broadcasting legislation claiming it was OFCOM’s responsibility. However, because OFCOM had done something in 2007 the broadcast was sent into the UK on SKY TV from Scandinavia, thus negating OFCOM’s jurisdiction. Hunt knew this, I even sent a letter to him myself two years ago, but of course he did nothing.

  • Alexandar’s Hippo

Superb! What a buffoon Hunt looks. Surely even he will realise we mean business.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Day/564918831 Tony Day

Homeopathy is nonsense Ashmole. Try doing some research into the matter.

  • ashy

Bravo 38 Degrees. The NHS does not belong to the goverment, its not theirs to sell. We the British public pay for our healthcare through taxes and national insurance, which is deducted from our salaries. The NHS is ours not the goverments so leave it alone.

  • Steve Harvey

The sight of this ad is a great morale-booster! Bravo! But never forget that, writing in 2009, Hunt expressed his desire to ‘de-nationalise’ the NHS, that his co-author described the NHS as ‘a 60-year old mistake’, and also that Cameron’s unelected health adviser assured a conference of American health insurance firms eager to feed in the UK that ‘the NHS will be shown no mercy’. We have a hard fight ahead of us.

  • Ste Greenall

As someone who is watching what Circle id doing at my local hospital – Hinchingbrooke in Huntingdon – I am delighted to see this advert and it shows great impact when we “all” chuck in just a few quid!

  • Telthecelt

Great stuff! Altruism is thin on the ground, especially so on the ground walked by career politicians. We have to be their conscience.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.kearney.756 Andrew Kearney

Outstanding, well done… I’m not in a position to contribute financially right now, if you need my assistance, perhaps I can contribute in another way. The work you are doing is much appreciated, thank you all. Well done.

It may be lonely at times, but know that you are not alone.

    Andrew ((x)).

  • Josh

You bought into all that rubbish did you? The NHS was not “heading for a disaster”, a “spending crisis” nor are we sitting on a “social care time-bomb.” Just like the analogy that the deficit is like a credit card and we can’t afford to borrow money… all part of the right’s plan to shrink the size of the state. Brain washing, don’t you see how you all sound alike?

  • Dr J

My goodness, doesn’t he look like Jeremy Hardy? I doubt that he would be as funny on The News Quiz, though.
Come to think of it, Jeremy Hardy could probably make a far better job of running the NHS….

  • Dr J

Err, I’m pretty sure that David is agreeing with the rest of us – the “dramatic action” is needed to save the NHS from the politicians (of any colour).
Meanwhile, the responsibility for slashing services is being dumped onto GPs, without the resources to meet that responsibility. When we, inevitably, fail, that will be used as justification for more involvement of the private sector – and look at how well they have run our railways!

  • Mary Zuckerman

I’m delighted we have got this ad into the Telegraph today-as it happens the day my son is having major surgery with NHS

  • Dr J

Appointing Hunt, of all people, to Health shows the contempt that Cameron really has for the NHS, it staff, and its patients.
Actions speak louder than words, Mr Cameron.

  • Sean

Good work, everyone! Let’s keep it up!

  • Dorene Mac

All politicall parties assure the people that the NHS will always “be free at the point of use” which it may well be. However, my concern is how much of the service will be provided by private companies? Companies in the game to make profits, many from the USA. The NHS was never intended to be profit making.

  • Kit O’Connor

The one thing I have noticed about Politicians in my 62 years is that they are all terrified of not being re-elected, therefor we must use that as a threat and let them know that we WILL force them to fight on their record making them explain why their actions are not in the interests of everyone in this country.

  • http://twitter.com/Nico22a022 Nico

Between the drafting and the printing of this letter it became public that Jeremy Hunt, having lobbied for Murdoch in government, has also lobbied for Richard Branson to take over even more of the NHS than he has already ” a five-year contract in March to run seven hospitals along with dentistry services, sexual health clinics, breast cancer screening and other community services”: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/sep/09/jeremy-hunt-virgin-hospital-deal?INTCMP=SRCH

A few days before that, we approached Richard Branson to ask him to comment on the privatisation of the NHS he is taking so much advantage of. This was his response:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFN8dZ8ZuuU&feature=youtu.be

  • Jo Noble

The NHS is a legacy we must fight to protect. The princiaple of free health care, which we all pay for with our taxes is one of the things that makes me proud to be British. It’s a hallmark for democracy and fairness.

  • Sideboard

I wonder if he’s already done the deal with some private firms, like he pretty much tried to do with the BskyB mob when he took over from Cable.

  • Sean

“Ye shall know them by their
fruits…” To the British People: Watch this wolf very closely, and react
accordingly to his party and its ideals of greed, and contempt for ordinary
people. The agenda of the Tories has always been to dismantle the NHS in favour
of corporate gain – an American style of ‘heathcare’ based on big business and
misery rather than according to need – a move tantamount to manslaughter, in my
view, for the ill it will cause the ordinary citizens of this country. Remember
this; remember also that a privatised NHS will be charges made in ADDITION to
your National Insurance, which will still be taken by a rampant and arrogant
government; and remember that all the while you do nothing, they gain in
confidence and blatancy to steal your health service before their term is up.
    Act now, or cry later!

  • http://www.facebook.com/phillip.anderton Phillip Anderton

What a flattering picture of you eh Mr Hunt? Makes you look the complete berk that you really are!

  • http://www.facebook.com/hottap Tarzan Evans
  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommi-Henriksen/1440962761 Tommi Henriksen

    Good-old Torygraph, eh?
Must be terrible being caught between the party and the principles which they once held.

  • Patrick

The government has been sensible – this petition is only to score cheap political points, in a newspaper that is read by mainly conservative readers, who are for reforming the NHS. How can you believe that allowing unqualified managers to make decisions on health issues can be right? What a waste of money.

  • http://twitter.com/Nico22a022 Nico

Yep. With Branson. See Guardian link in my other post.

  • Rachael Rowan

Add one more to that! It is not yours to sell!,,

  • Rosa

Don’t overlook the fact that the NHS is potentially a cash cow for private investors of one sort or another and hits might have something to do with why the tories and new labour are so keen on all of this. Quite apart from the health aspects, look at what has happened to the utilities, owned by foreign entities, accountable only through a limp-wristed regulator appointed from the midst of these elites, profits creamed off, prices out of control. Mega-profits for some, safe in tax havens, stolen from taxpayers, people need to take this on and stand up to it across the board. And demand that the Labour Party wake up and do something about it.

  • Rhian Davies

A National Health Service is a basic human right!

  • Lionbear72

This is depressing – £35,000+ given to Murdoch (Times) and the Barclays brothers (Telegraph). I’m not sure this is in the spirit of 38 Degrees: People (i.e. three very wealthy tax avoiding white men), Power (i.e. media barons), Change (i.e. more attacks on the NHS). You simply don’t give money to Murdoch or the Barclays brothers if you want change. Period. Basically you’ve paid for another amoral journalist to do more damage to the NHS through scurrilous reporting of the evils of the public sector. Well done everyone!

  • Steve R

Brilliant ad. Can we run more in the Telegraph – we must have some money left! How much did we rase?

  • Gypsy

I am very, very proud of having being part of this-I hope he will listen, but I doubt.

  • mordor

its not just the nhs anything that makes life a bit more comfortable for the working classes and the old and sick is under the hammer don’t forget we have to reward the rich for ruining our economy it is there birthright

  • Vivien Holden

brilliant ,the HNS is held in common by us all, this will hopefully alert our government and Telegraph readers that there are many, many people who will fight to keep it every step of the way.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.kavanagh.52 Tony Kavanagh

We need to keep a close watch on this dodgy character – should have been drummed out of the Government over his links with Murdoch, but he clung on by his greasy fingertips and is now in charge of our precious NHS. Lets not take our eyes off him for a second!

  • Alan arsden

The Olympics proved that this country is at its best when functioning collectively for the common good. When banks collapsed it wasn’t the private sector that was forced to rescue them. It was a collective effort by an entire society. The NHS epitomises this collective action for the common good. If we organise our society under that ethic and whistle up another 9 billion quid we could solve the housing crisis and do away with tuition fees. The Free market is dead in the water.

  • Richard Cox

The politicians are bringing in privatisation via the back door. Remember what this lot did to our free dental service, allocated dentists 4 minutes for each patient, an impossible situation. Accordingly the dentists opted out of NHS dental care in masses resulting in millions of people having to pay extortionate amounts for ‘free’ treatment – privatisation via the back door which saved politicians millions to squander on other failures. It’s already started in some areas you have been warned….

  • Palandjian

Have you checked out JH’s pal Andrew Law. Law is patron of Hotcourses, CIO of Caxton Associates & he is on the board of Social Finance which is pushing Social Impact Bonds at the NHS. Social Finance is also involved with Indigo Health & Shaftesbury Partnership

  • John

Now is the time to act, to protect what is our most valuable asset; the
National Health Service!! You can be assured, that the forced
expenditure cuts by this government WILL cause unnecessary pain and
suffering to many people, when they a
    re
at their most vulnerable! In my view, it is inevitable that the ongoing
reduction in hospital beds, front line staff and services, will result
in a premature loss of life, for many hundreds and possibly thousands of
people! WHY SHOULD WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN!!

  • mordor

i am not sure jeremy hunt will be any good for us he runs around politics protected leveson showed us that so i fear we will be paying the price as usual

  • Bert Morgan

It despairs me that me that 38 degrees or any other protest movement should have to lobby this nincompoop, Hunt.
Cameron has chosen this reptile to oversee privatisation of the NHS because he is thick enough to disregard any flack thrown at him.
The Labour party has shown itself to be a collection of left wing tories by remaining silent while the NHS is dismantled.
If the ordinary citizens of this country don’t physically get off their fat asses to revolt now, then look forward to the end of the NHS and welfare system.

  • paddymac

I can hardly believe it! Jeremy Hunt running the NHS, on top of all the chaos that we’ve had to endure. It’s beyond belief. The sooner they’re out the better.

  • patricia

why does the govt not nationalize the funeral business..minimum cost.. think of the revenue that would bring in…at the moment we are being ripped off with costs ….why must we pay this money to be buried ..disgusting….are we mad to pay thousands to be

And now TDC wasted more money , on paper work , setting up polls here , money could have been better spent , on the town !!!!!!

Here, here. The fact he has been appointed into the role makes me extremely nervous about what comes next.

The only way to protect our Health Service is to get rid of this government as soon as possible.

I still want to know what the fluffy Lib Dims think about all this. Do they think about it? Do they think? Do they? Do….

  • Kevin

Look folks – I work for the NHS – It will take a lot more than this. He is accelerating a strategy which has been formulated and incrementally introduced over the last 25 years. Labour moved quietly down this road too. Their Social Care Bill (funding for post hosp. care included) opened the last gate.

NHS treatment units have been referred to as Business Units for some years. A few years ago each department was made into a business unit. The accounts for each unit were prepared separately. Why? So that there were discreet parts of the NHA which could be put out for tender. For a few years a ‘tendering’ system for each service (business unit) has been ion operation. The caveat was that the NHS got preferential treatment. This was the ‘training time’ for the Primary Health Care Trusts to learn a it about tendering and business. The caveat of NHS preference has now been removed.

We are not dealing with a single political party agenda here. We are talking about a model which has been creeping forward to an agenda for many years across parties.

We are trying to stop a full tide… not a simple political wave.

We can do it… dig in for the long haul… The NHS is leaner and fitter because of this process. We are more user friendly and listen better to peoples needs and wants.

We do put the patient first. We do not ask for a credit card before treating someone!

Finally – We have a staff group who are really committed to care of the patient. Many of us go the extra mile. I am on leave for a week now… I will spend at least two days working from home… My colleagues in the private sector have had that commitment crushed by financial incentives and profit demands from their commercial employers. Remember the commercial employers duty is first of all to the stock market investors.

    Fight this!

  • Kevin

Josh – Where are you getting your data? Our trust had £2 million cuts last year and another £2 million this year. We have made hundreds of people redundant and cut services. Our clinic building is no longer fit for purpose. Our Trust cannot afford to get another just now so they are moving us in with another clinic which will only have room for a third of us so we are being told to work from home!

This is being repeated all over the country!

  • Kevin

    I am an NHS employee.

I left two comments on this thread.

One was deleted by the moderators. That explained the incremental progress to this current situation over the last 25 years. It showed how this is not a political party development but one which is mere deeply driven by economic ideology.

That message was evidence based and not emotional or political. Why was it deleted please?

38 degrees – What is your agenda?

Let’s see if this one is allowed eh?
