The campaign to stop Murdoch’s BSkyB powergrab continues

July 8th, 2011 by

Update 14:23, 13th July 2011. We did it!! Murdoch has withdrawn his bid for BSkYB. Well done everyone!! We did it!!

This isn’t a campaign victory post – there’s almost certainly more to do in our campaign to rein in Murdoch’s power.

But with today’s announcements of public inquiries into hacking, and positive noises from Ofcom about an investigation into whether Murdoch is “fit and proper” to own BSkyB, it does seem like a good moment to recap everything 38 Degrees members have done so far:

- July 2010: 38 Degrees members launch the campaign
Rupert Murdoch announces plans to take over BskyB. 38 Degrees members came together calling on the Minister responsible, Vince Cable, to block the deal. The petition grew quickly with tens of thousands of us signing.

- September 2010: 38 Degrees members urge Cable to listen to advisers
We had our first breakthrough when the BBC received leaked documents from Vince Cable’s department revealing that even his own advisers were telling him that Murdoch’s deal mustn’t go through. So 38 Degrees members came together signing an open letter Vince Cable to listen to his advisers and hold firm by blocking Murdoch’s plans.

- November 2010: Success – Cable orders Ofcom inquiry.
We’d raised money for adverts in Vince Cable’s constituency demanding an inquiry into the deal. 38 Degrees members then celebrated as Cable accepted our demands and ordered an inquiry into Murdoch’s powergrab. Thousands of us wrote to our MPs urging them to make sure the inquiry had teeth.

November 2010 – 60,000 of us tell Ofcom the deal needs to be halted
38 Degrees members teamed up with our friends at Avaaz and together we sent over 60,000 submissions to the Ofcom inquiry.

22nd December – Hunt replaces Cable
After Vince Cable was caught by undercover journalists commenting on Murdoch’s power grab, he was replaced by Jeremy Hunt – an outspoken supporter of Rupert Murdoch.

- 31st December: 70,000 strong emergency petition
Together with our friends at Avaaz we handed in our 70,000 strong emerency petition on New Years Eve, demanding Murdoch’s BSkyB takeover is sent to the Competition Commission for a wide-ranging and impartial investigation. On the same day Jeremy Hunt receives Ofcom’s report, recommending that Murdoch’s plans should be referred to the competition commission.

- Feb 7th 2011: 38 Degrees members meet Hunt
38 Degrees member, David Morgan, organises a meeting with his MP, Jeremy Hunt, to deliver the 40,000 strong petition along with local 38 Degrees and Avaaz members.

- June 30th: Rally against Murdoch’s green light
As the Guardian reports  ”Jeremy Hunt has confirmed that he plans to give News Corporation’sBSkyB takeover the green light, after nearly four months of negotiations between the culture secretary, Rupert Murdoch’s media company and regulators over spinning off Sky News”, 38 Degrees members join with Avaaz to hold an emergency rally outside Hunt’s department.

- 5th July 2011: Emergency Petition passes 100,000
As news breaks of widespread phone hacking by Murdoch’s News Of The World, 38 Degrees members join with Avaaz members to demand a full public inquiry into the Murdoch empire’s phone hacking activities.

- July 6th: Emergency protest
38 Degrees members team up with Avaaz to hold an emergency protest outside the House of Commons (along with puppets of Murdoch, Hunt and Cameron)

- July 7th: Thousands of 38 Degrees members urge MPs to speak out
As disgust at the behaviour of Murdoch’s newspapers grows tens of thousands of 38 Degrees members email their MPs urging them to speak out and stand up to Murdoch

- July 8th: Emergency petition handed in
On the final day of the government consultation we hand in the 100,000 strong emergency petition, along with our friends at Avaaz.

This has made my decade! Murdoch being investigated into whether he is ‘fit and proper’ to own Sky broadcasting. Fit and proper. Should be easy to answer!

Could you guys consider creating a petition for those who believe Murdoch isn’t “fit and proper” to sign and submit to Ofcom ?

Notice that Hunt said he would take the closure of the News of the Screws into account in considering the BSkyB deal. I take that to mean he will try to argue that the Murdoch print empire has shrunk and is therefore less dominant and less of a threat to UK media plurality than before.
I think the OFCOM interest is the best angle for keeping Murdoch’s grubby paws off BSkyB now. I agree that a petition to OFCOM is an excellent idea. This has the added bonus that if OFCOM say News Corp/Murdoch is not fit to own BSkyB, foreign media regulators are likely to take notice and consider his operations in, say, India.

I very much agree – was logging on to say, Please deliver this petition to Ofcom now, not the government. Ofcom using the ‘not fit and proper’ clause is far and away the best bet. Hunt is known to be supportive of this deal, for whatever reason. Time to adjust the campaign!

All the dimwits who have been buying News of the World for 168 years and who still buy papers or use the services of businesses owned by Murdoch are responsible for this latest mess.  There is one sure way to bring him to a shuddering halt – don’t buy anything he owns.  As long as the dim-witted among us continue not to use any judgement in their daily lives, scum like Murdoch will continue to ruin lives.  He’s only doing what comes naturally to him – making money any way he can.  The solution is simple – dry up his income and he will fade away.

Campaigns are not needed to bring people like Murdoch to their knees;  all that’s needed is a little common sense…..an item always in very short supply I’m afraid.  I’ve never bought or read News of the World or, as far as I know, anything else Murdoch owns so I don’t feel at all responsible for the vicious behaviour of the people who work for him.

Scum breeds scum – always has; always will.  What’s needed is decent education for a generation or two and people like Murdoch will be hard pressed to find ways to make their filthy lucre.

By the way, if Murdoch does get BSkyB, it would be oh, so easy to make him wish he hadn’t if only people either cancelled their subscription to it or didn’t start one.  Why anyone with any brains is still watching the telly anyway I can’t imagine, but if you really feel compelled to let such rubbish as passes for programming these days into your lives, at least do the world a favour by not supporting BSkyB if Murdoch gets his grubby, ugly little paws on it.

Will they? No, of course they won’t – they are the types who prefer to blame anyone else for what goes wrong in the world. If you still watch the telly on BSkyB even though Murdoch owns it, you will be directly to blame when he does the dirty on people again.

Cripple the guy by not having anything to do with anything he owns…..much more effective than any campaign.

Murdoch’s attitude about this crisis at News International, and his main concern being Rebekah Brookes, is nauseating, this man needs to go back from whence he came without any controlling interests in the UK

  • Penelope

It’s worth spending a few minutes reading the bio. of Murdock on Wiki.  No wonder he gets away with so much – he has the four most important men in his world (and ours) tucked away tidily in his pocket.  I name no names – go and look for yourselves and then don’t be surprised if he gets BSkyB.

Dear Elizabeth – the man’s on wife number four already which should tell you everything you need to know about his private life and attitudes to women and children. Do we think it’s at all possible Ms. Brookes’ relationship with him is entirely businesslike and public? Hmmm…….?

Actually he can’t go back whence he came as Australia deprived him of his Australian citizenship when he became American.

    people like
Murdoch shouldnt be allowed to get grubby hands on BSkyB. I dont buy Sunday
papers at all now. I did buy the News of the world today.I wanted to see on the
front page in big letters “SORRY TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WE’VE BROUGHT GREIF
TOO. not ANYWHERE in the paper was there any apologies to the people that they
re-stirred memories of their loved ones!!!!!!!!! Murdoch doesnt give a damm
about these people, all he was interested in was how much money was made,to put
into his greedy pot. If you are apalled at what Mr. Murdoch has done, stop him
from getting BSkyB in any way YOU CAN. He has to be stopped NOW. Jsh13

This is a great campaign and I am amazed at what we have achieved! If I’m honest, I thought we were going to loose at many different points, but after the NOTW it seems politicians are standing up to Murdoch and his grip is loosening. People power is working. I want to say a big thank you to 38 Degrees staff for working so tenaciously on this campaign. It’s a real inspiration.

…and for those who think me a cynic (which I am) there was this in an analysis by Torin Douglas, the Media Correspondent on the BBC web site:  “Thank you & goodbye,” proclaims the final front page, over a spread of memorable scoops exposing the frailties of sports and TV stars, politicians and royalty – the familiar formula that still attracted seven-and-a-half million readers.
This week it could be more. The paper has doubled its print run, calculating that more people will want to mark a moment in history than protest at the alleged phone-hacking of Milly Dowler and victims’ relatives, which brought the paper’s downfall.”That means Murdock calculates about 15 million papers will have been sold today.  To whom, one might ask?  Certainly not to people who consider him one of the lowest life forms.  So who are those 15 million people who can’t see beyond the ends of their pathetic noses?  Not you or I, of course…..must be those awful people down the road. As for ‘moment in history’  and ‘readers’  how unbelievably grotesque to consider the demise of that filthy rag as any part of any useful history and to consider the people who turn its pages as ‘readers’.  Couldn’t a more useful message have been sent to Murdoch and Brookes and others of that vile ilk if all 15 million copies sat on the news-stands until they rotted?  People pretend to believe in justice, fair play, a decent future, peace on earth and all the rest of it, but most are not willing to put their money where their mouths are….or, in this case NOT put their money where their mouths are by not giving another penny of it to Murdoch.  I’d like to think they are all thoroughly ashamed of themselves but as they’ll not be among those who will read this comment, I suppose that’s a foolish hope.  I doubt very much if any of the NOW readers ever do anything that advances the cause of anything except their own ignorance.

  • Penelope

…and Jsh13 – it’s people like you that Murdoch loves most and who hand him his power on a plate.

Instead of putting yet more money in Murdoch’s pocket by buying the last dying halitosis breath of the News of the World this past Sunday, couldn’t you have taken a look at someone else’s copy, read the front page standing in front of a news kiosk, read your local library’s copy, had the intelligence not to give a damn what the slimy little creep wrote? It’s people like you who have the likes of Murdock laughing all the way to the bank.  Don’t you understand anything?  I do hope you really are only 13; there may be some hope for you yet but if you’re full grown and still don’t get it, then I’m afraid you are among those holding the world back from ever becoming a better place by allowing yourselves to be led around by the nose by people like Murdoch. What on earth where you thinking of to even want to touch the filthy rag? Didn’t you understand that “last issue” nonsense was just a scam to get all the idiots running out to buy it?

Some days I do really despair of the human race.

  • Anonymous

agree totally with your statement here dude, but i must say that working in a relativly busy bar/restaurant on sunday afternoon i was surprised to find the place (and customers) devoid of copies of NOW despite a lot of talk about the subject. seems like a good few of those papers (at least where i am) will turn to waste after all.

  • Bob

It’s important to realise that if Murdoch gets BskyB he will get a controlling stake of Freesat. We all know what will happen next – all the best channels will become ‘subscription only’ and before you know it, the only way to watch and record TV (in areas with poor aerial reception) will be with a sky subscription.

Chuffin marvellous!! PEOPLE POWER AT ITS FINEST

I have witnessed at first hands the lies that Murdoch’s Sun ‘newspaper’ has told in order to whip up indignation, stir hatred and sell copy. I would dance on News International / News Corp’s grave.
