Your ideas for an eye-catching advert against Murdoch’s BSkyB takeover bid?

July 26th, 2010 by

The “Murdoch Inquiry Now” petition is growing fast – already nearly 30,000 of us have signed. And we’ve just seen the strongest sign yet that we’re having an impact.

38 Degrees members paid for these adverts for our succesful campaign against BBC cuts. What eye-catching ad ideas do you have for our campaign against the BSkyB takeover?

38 Degrees members paid for these adverts for our succesful campaign against BBC cuts. What eye-catching ad ideas do you have for our campaign against the BSkyB takeover?

A few weeks ago, Rupert Murdoch was going full steam ahead with his plan to take 100% control of BSkyB. He’d gone public with the plans and he had the backing of BSkyB top brass. But it’s just emerged that he’s delayed making the next step.

For the deal to go ahead he needs to submit his plans to the European Commission. Last week there were rumours that Murdoch hadn’t done this. We’ve just had that confirmed – Murdoch’s delayed submitting his takeover plans to Brussels.

There’s been no public explanation. Only Murdoch himself and a few senior executives at News Corp will know exactly what’s going on. But it seems likely that our pressure has had an effect – Rupert Murdoch has decided to bide his time and hope we’ll go away.

He may be taking his time, but Murdoch still wants to extend his control of the UK media and people power is still our best bet for stopping him. We need to seize the opportunity of extra time to get more people involved and hatch even better plans. That way when Murdoch does make his next move, we’ll be ready to move even faster than him.

Now we’ve got more time to deliver the campaign, we’ve got more time to come up with creative ways of getting Vince Cable’s attention. We can work together to come up with the most powerful message possible. Have you got an idea for a powerful advert? A draft design? Another way of getting the campaign message across? Please share your ideas for powerful adverts, and other creative tactics by uploading them as comments to this blog post.

  • Malcolm Padmore

A picture of Murdoch holding a fibre optic cable wrapped around a diminutive Vince Cable with the caption – 'Have you got Cable? I have'

  • Cheryl

I'm sure someone else has probably already used this idea but here goes anyway:

    a) a humanised stylised image of the UK incorporating horrified eyes in a face with tape in an X across the downturned mouth or lips stitched together, shackles criss-crossing the UK and maybe in a straightjacket. (Cornwall and the South East bent down a bit to look a bit like feet

Just a thought but achievable by someone with more artistic ability than me!

  • V Thom

How about something which triggers a connection with 1984- Big Murdoch (as in big Brother- not the current one) or Stop Soma from Murdoch?? Vince will be aware of the idea of the power of autocratic control of the media from this literary source.

  • Chris B

Newspaper-cartoon style satellite dish, a smirking Murdoch behind it with his hands adjusting it, with a magnet at its centre instead of a transponder. The magnet is sucking in the world.

I like the punning idea from someone else of Vince Cable tied up with aerial cable!

Going on the theory that “sex sells”, I've come up with what I think to be a brilliant piece of marketing. I hope you like it

Not exactly an advert – but just get him to watch Fox News as shown in the USA. It is vicious and awful.

  • Adrianmorrisuk

What about a poster advertisement showing one half of Rupert Murdoch's smiling face and the other half showing a sinister wolf with the words: 'A smiling face or a snarling wolf?' underneath, followed by the words 'If you disagree with Rupert Murdoch's tightening grip on the media in the UK then support our campaign to stop him having complete control of BSkyB by vising our website … and signing our petition', then perhaps at the bottom 'Keep Britain's broadcast media neutral and unbiased'.

Obviously you would have to shop Murdoch's head in place of the manga characters with all the robot bits.

  • http://twitter.com/andymaclarty Andy MacLarty

    How about:
“Ever seen what Fox News did for democracy?”
A mosaic of some of the U.S viewers would be ample I feel…

  • berlinese

Not exactly an idea, but a direction for one.

We could focus on Fox News, and the kind of 'News' we don't want (see clips from 'Out Foxed & bill o'reilly' on you tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IwIRNM5noY).

    Sick and dangerous.

  • joolz

Needs a session in the pub to refine this one, but….

Something to catch Vince's eye = ballroom dancing, his passion. Apparently an ambition is to be on Strictly Come Dancing, a BBC product

    And/or

While I couldn't find anything obvious on Google to link Murdoch to ballroom dancing, Fox does produce “So you think you can dance” (very show biz and aimed at teen audience). Also, he owns The Simpsons.

    There must be something there!

  • Css

There must be some witty person who can come up with a clever connection between (Vince) Cable, Cable TV, strecthed to breaking point, high tension etc……

    We had Big Oil: BP!
We had Big Banks: Lehman, Goldman, RBS!
    No to Big Media.

  • Acheetham42@yahoo.co.uk

Vince Cable is a ballroom dancer. When he spoke in Leicester (as well as asking what he would do about Trident, in answer to a dare I asked him to dance – he said “How kind”!).
    Strictly remain independent
Don't let Murdoch cut in – image Vince dancing with free Media

  • Spaccaboy

hahahahah gets my vote but a little too niche for the majority to find funny….

  • Spaccaboy

Freedom of speech has a price
    Murdoch wants to buy it
We stop him now or we lose it forever

Say NO to Murdoch taking over UK media

  • Spaccaboy

Don't let Rupert 'Murdoch' the UK media

    - under the 'murdoch' have the word Murder crossed out.
Can put the headline with a nice image of a satellite dish with a knife in it?

  • Justin

    IDEA FOR AD CAMPAIGN:
A series of ads each showing a mock front page of a news paper …the names of the newspapers are different, but the content is obviously EXACTLY the same. It could have a headline celebrating the “freedom of speach” or freedome of the press in the UK…and a picture of you know who?
Another similar series could be mock pages from TV guides, showing identical programming…again it would have to be really obvious.

    How about

A picture of Murdoch on one side, picture the houses of parliament/Cameron/The queen/Vince Cable (some sort of icon that shows who is actually in charge) with the slogan 'Who's in Charge?'

  • Benj.

Whatever it is, it's got to have his name in it, for example, “Hey, Vince!” in massive letters, then the actual message in smaller letters underneath.

Because that will freak him out.

Can you put together a video of Anne Coulter/Glen Beck and O'Reilly from FOX on their worst rants – maybe about socialized medicine or anything said about the NHS?? – I know I got furious about some of the things said about the NHS here in the US (I live in the USA temporarily with 'Fox' here – well I don't actually watch it because its so awful.)

    The placardy one:
    Sky? Why? Justify.

The 'Flattery will get you everywhere one':
One Man CAN Make a Difference – Let Him Be Cable, Not Murdoch

    The visual imagery one:
Artwork of the sky full of Sky/Murdoch 'stuff', a grounded bird representing choice/independance/Reithian values with wings clipped.

    The way I feel one:
    The Sky is Caving In

The 'My brain hurts and I can't think how to finish it' one:
A combo of pie in the Sky ideas and having a finger in every pie.

    The intellectual, grown up one:
    Sky smells of poo!

  • gw

would like to suggest a simple statement comparing the daily cost of the bbc compared to that of a sky channel

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mal-Charles/1520672948 Mal Charles

    1. A well known catch phrase to hold attention, and then deliver the punch line e.g.

To BskyB or not to BskyB

    That is the question

    That Murdoch poses.

Make your Sky a Murdoch free zone.

    2. Or else something extremely SIMPLE, pertaining to be visual ‘darken’ but appeals emotionally, to emotionally darken, a play on one word. The word ‘your’ also implies ownership or identity and personalises the slogan making it worth fighting for.

Don’t let Murdoch darken your Sky
