Flashmob outside the BBC

May 25th, 2010 by

38 Degrees members with the 80,000 strong save the BBC petitions

Today people took to the streets across the UK calling on the BBC not to cut Asian Network, BBC6 Music and the BBC website. Flashmobs took place in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow, making sure that BBC bosses know how many people oppose their cuts. We’ve got photos from some of the demos below, when we get more we’ll add them in.

Over 80,000 people signed the “Save the BBC” petitions – which 38 Degrees members presented to the BBC Trust (see the photo above).

The BBC won’t announce it’s plans for another few months but one thing is clear, tens of thousands of us don’t want the BBC to cut the services we love. So what should we do now? If you have any ideas let us know in the comments below.

Not a patch on what the 6Music listeners managed.

800+ outside the BBC on Saturday.

You got a handful of people to show up. That's more damaging than not doing it at all.

Thanks you to those who carried the case to the door of the BBC

  • Faraz

    Keep it up.

    WHAT DRIVES YOU PEOPLE!.

    “What drives you people?”

Um…a good degree of anger and an appreciation of decent public services. That's my guess.

I believe that the BBC should be promoted in education. We need a solid base to defend the Beeb, as some organisations make knocking it seem to be acceptable. I'd like to be more aware of all the marvellous things the BBC offer, I'm sure people would be prepared to pay more for the licence fee. Maybe we need to see the figures next to a competing organisation. Perhaps we'll see the BBC is value for money. My Dad used to pay through the nose for sky just to watch the football, but he hardly used the service because it was on too late for him. And he had adverts. Talking of sport, I don't like the way it is purloined from the national heritage.

Type your comment Dear BBC Trust,

I am writting in direct response to the consultation about the Strategic Review recently published by the Trust. I urge you not to continue with your plans to make cuts to the BBC. The current proposals would get rid of some excellent services, including 6Music, Asian Network and many BBC websites.

BBC Radio 6 Music is especially close to my heart, It is home to many exellent DJ's who showcase a very high standard of Alternative music and culture, the likes of which cannot be heard anywhere else on the radio circuit in the UK at this time. This quality should not be under estimated therefore.

Radio 6 is a beacon of shining light amongst the tautologous media fog and drivel; to turn out the lights of one so bright would undoubtely spell doom for so much musical culture, aspiration and potential.

I know that my thoughts and feelings on this subject are shared by many:
In the words of a fellow petitioner, “We are not just passive consumers, These stations mean more to us than you could possibly imagine. Where do we turn? There is no alternative”

The BBC likes to pride it's self on “putting quality first” in the words of Mr Thompson. I believe the BBC should be proud of the unique station that is 6 music, and the other alternative services it provides.

Please don't go ahead with the current plans to make these cuts and find alternative ways to make sure the BBC can continue to do what it does best in the future…

Honestly, I didnt even know there was a BBC6. I still struggle with the concept of paying for all these channels I never asked for and do not want. Its high time for a more general review of broadcasting in the UK. Personally I resent paying for services I dont want but on the other hand I would be happy to pay more for the services I actually choose. Maybe we could have a more intelligent form of funding where the allocation of funds is proportional. I could understand it if there actually was a reasonable percentage of UK tax payers as a whole using a given service but lets be honest, its not the case in this instance.
