BBC posters: how they’ll look

April 30th, 2010 by

Today, we got through the final designs for the Stop the BBC  Cuts billboards, that we paid for together with thousands of 38 Degrees members chipping in. They’ll be going up near BBC offices in cities all around the UK from 10th May, and we’re hoping people will walk, cycle or drive by and give a ‘honk’ in support of our campaign when they do.

Here’s how the posters will look on the big billboards all around the UK:

Billboards will go up where BBC bosses cant miss them

Billboards will go up where BBC bosses can't miss them

Hundreds of members helped by making comments about the first design (which we shared on our blog and Facebook a few weeks ago), and the designers have taken their main comments on board, by making sure there was a way for everyone to join in as they want past the billboards and by ensuring that we mentioned the cuts that members were most concerned about: 6Music, Asian Network and the website.

Nobody working for the BBC will be able to miss our message: these huge billboards on the doorsteps of their offices will send a huge signal that thousands of us don’t want them to cut services like 6Music, Asian Network and the BBC website. By bringing together everyone taking action to stop the cuts, we’ll make it clear that we won’t stand by and let millionaire media owners dictate what happens to our BBC.

What do you think? How else can we make sure BBC bosses get our message?

I think most people would be grateful for the work that the agency who've worked on this project have done for no fee, but it seems there's a large amount of dissatisfaction with the end result.

I can see some reasoning behind the design, but this second attempt hasn't properly addressed the clarity issues of exactly what's being protested against, and why. Some people might 'honk' for the hell of it, but would most really know what for from seeing that image? The link at the bottom of the poster is barely discernible and could probably only be recalled under deep hypnosis!

With the ETA of 10th of May, I hope there's still time to get an alternative done, so I would again vote for Ash's striking, straightforward, and likely inexpensive to print, design. It's implicit that he expects no reward for the work beyond helping this cause succeed. The text underneath could be modded to mention additional areas apart from 6 Music/AN, or perhaps that space could just be used to clearly show a link that explains all the undesirable effects.

It uses the BBC logo, but significantly alters it. Clearly it's a critique, so it would almost certainly be legally permissible under 'fair dealing' guidelines (as with 'fair use' in the US). Even if the BBC did object, they'd initially only issue a 'cease and desist', giving a reasonable window to comply; by the end of which the ad would be down anyway.

As when it was originally proposed a few weeks ago, it has a lot more positivity from the 'Save 6 Music' community, than the design posted on 38 Degrees:-

If there's still time to alter course, I think doing so could well prove wise. The image is an elegant design classic and will be remembered long after the dust settles on this campaign.

I know which one I'd sooner honk at!

Another woefully bad attempt at graphic design which in my opinion is seriously flawed in terms of getting the message across. The 'honk' approach seems dreadfully tacky and please also note that people who walk or cycle past cannot 'honk'.

Like many who have donated, I contributed financially to this cause because I feel passionately that 6music should not be axed. I don't have a problem with the BBC making cuts elsewhere, in fact it probably is necessary – it's their focus that is misguided.

38 Degrees PLEASE listen to what your donors are requesting and use something more like this

I've linked to a revised version of the previous image, changed to reflect the extra numbers who've joined the Save 6 Facebook campaign in the interim. I'm sure Ash won't mind the tinkering:

Again, the effort put in by the agency who donated their time is genuinely appreciated; but seriously, ask yourselves honestly which is the more striking image. This one REALLY cuts it ;)

Can I ask exactly what difference honking makes? Are they all going to be recorded and played on loop to Thommo until he gives in? No?

Hmmm. Really useful and well-thought out advertising there.
