One down two to go – Nick Clegg accepts our call for a right to recall your MP

June 18th, 2009 by

Despite the best efforts of uncooperative computers and a dodgy printer, a group of us made it down to Westminster on Wednesday morning to hand in the petition on recall. And a suitably hefty tome it made too with a total of 5,111 signatures.

The first port of call was the Houses of Parliament to hand it over to Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

Taking time out of his prep for Prime Minister’s Questions, we were collected from central lobby and escorted up to his office. As you might expect, the Lib Dem leadership have been squirrelled away at the top of one of the Palaces of Westminster in something akin to Rapunzel’s tower. After negotiating the stairs we were welcomed in by the man himself (surprisingly tall and a very firm handshake in case you were interested).

Clegg quizzed Executive Director David Babbs on the organisation and cast an envious eye over the rapidly increasing membership numbers – 38 Degrees is going from strength to strength in a way that the old-school political organisations can only dream of.

It was then time for the handover. And there’s very little resistance from the Lib Dems on the issue of a right to recall. Clegg even asked if he could sign the petition himself – one down two to go. If only all the party leaders were so receptive to the people’s desire for real change in the way our politics works.

The next stop was Downing Street, to see if we could hand in a copy of the petition at number 10 for Gordon’s perusal. We didn’t make it through the main gates, but the very friendly police officer on duty took our names and agreed to hand in the petition on our behalf. It’s a shame the Prime Minister, or a member of the government, couldn’t take a little time out to listen to what our members had to say on the issue – they’ve clearly been too be busy thinking about how best to fudge the next big issue on the agenda.

But at least we can be sure the petition will have made it into government hands – and a reply to our demands should be imminent. The Conservatives on the other hand have to date been unable (or unwilling) to accept the petition at all. We’re still hoping for an audience with David Cameron to hand across the demands on all our members behalf – come on, Dave! Fingers crossed it’ll happen before all the MPs jet off for summer recess.

We’ve got the support of one of the three main parties, now we just have to hope that all the grand words used by Labour and Conservative alike about listening to and engaging with the people in the light of the expenses scandal were more than just hot air. The enthusiasm of 38 Degrees’ membership shows a clear will from the public at large for a right to recall – the politicians must take note.

Go 38 degrees! Go people power!!

(Starting to feel quite evangelistic about it all…)

I should not attatch too much importance to Clegg signing if I were you. He is no hero. He is a part of the corrupt and bent Parliamentary system and his cronies in the country are often a nasty bunch. Never judge a party by the personality of its leader. That is how we got Blair!

What do you mean “one down, two to go”? Oh, I see – despite your protestations of being catalysts for change you are entirely wedded to the centralised, pre-devolved state.

What a pile of Anglocentric twaddle!

    Tut, tut.

Kelly’s Committe heard amazing evidence about MPs whining about working hours. Beckett employs her husband Leo she wants to be with him. Actually MPs should work shifts as well as I did nights for 7 years. Yes need for recall and monthly reports from MPs just like we had to do work sheets. Frank Field has moaoned about being accountable in terms of time sheet and Patrick Jenkin in the House of Lords!!!!

Got to say people, with respect, this forum/blog is dying a death!

Come on 38,..you need to be a symbol of hope for all the pissed off people in this country. Nobody wants a descent into chaos and violent uprising. This site/blog/discussion board could (should) be a big part of a phenomenal shift in conciousness for the better, however it doesn’t appear to be. Why for example has Hunter’s rallying call for us to sue our respective MPs individually not been taken up? Why have virtually all the suggestions you’ve had recieved no response? I believe a substantial factor is the unfriendly layout of the site and an unwillingness to moderate the blog. Not wating to shape the agenda is a just reason, but not feeding back to the people you have rallied is tantamount to disaster for a people powered movement.

I’m not saying that you haven’t achieved anything, on the contrary, what you have done so far is wonderful and (I believe) unprecedented. You deserve tremendous accolades – we just need to be doing it better!

    We need:

    1) a proper, more easily navigable forum with sophisticated, transparent analytical tools to give the membership an idea of what we collectively agree on to determine what steps to take next.

    2) feedback from the people who set the site up and run it. This is especially important as you people are some of the most right-on bods on the planet and could offer counsel and wisdom to the frustrated/confused amongst us.

    3) an easily navigable archive, bursting with statistical porn and other empirical campaign data and materials to either substantiate our claims that People Power can work and is working or otherwise. We need up-to-the-minute campaign news and feedback. Nothing will win the majority over better than cold, hard evidence and 24-7 updates. If this reevolution is going to remain peaceful, it has to be entertaining!

    4) rally the volunteers…there are currently 2.47 million unemployed peole in this country. It wouldn’t take a whole lot to turn them all into reform activists. Indeed, it is already happening. Very. Slowly. Instruct everybody volunteering their time for the campaign to inform the DWP so UK Gov Plc gets the data coming from inside and out.

    5) a national campaign incorporating multi-media viral techniques and offline street teams to strengthen our membership and thereby our political clout. I wager a significant percentage of our current membership are (unemployed) creatives who would happily volunteer their services to generate content. There would, however be NO POINT in pursuing such a campaign until the previous 4 points have been dealt with. The site needs to reflect the scale of 38 degree’s ambition or it will die in the water.

    6) better, more transparent links/integration with similar organisations, specifically Stop the War Coalition, Avaaz, the Venus Project and the Zeitgeist movement. Much of the data summarised by these intellectual powerhouses are essential tools in the battle to clean up UK (and Geo) Politics/Money/Social responsibilities.

Do excuse the rant…’taking over’ the ‘blog’ – can’t help speaking my mind though. Hope things pick up round here soon and we start seeing mo change soon! On a comedy note, have you looked at 38degrees.co.uk ? if I was paranoid i’d think mr Babbs & Co were doing a bit of moonlighting for UK Gov Plc’s corporate black ops…rounding up all the believers to be ‘interrogated’…. hmmm…:D

Fully retract the ‘blog dying a death’ statement…it’s just difficult to navigate/keep up with discussions…no indexing…no ucp….38 needs a proper forum I reckons….
